Trasylol (aprotinin) is a medication administered by injection to reduce bleeding during complex surgery such as heart surgery and liver surgery. Trasylol was manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, and its purpose is to decrease the need for blood transfusions during surgery, as well as end-organ damage due to hypotension (low blood pressure) as a result of blood loss. Trasylol recall The drug was temporarily withdrawn worldwide in 2007 after U.S. tests indicated the drug posed a significantly higher risk of death or serious complications as opposed to other anti-bleeding drugs. Trasylol was permanently recalled May 2008 except for very restricted research use. Complications from Trasylol According to research conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, the drug might increase the possibility of kidney damage, renal toxicity, myocardial infarction and stroke. Research has also shown a significantly higher risk of death as opposed to other anti-bleeding drugs. How Do I know if Trasylol was Administered? Although a patient may not know whether Trasylol was administered during heart surgery, if the patient experienced kidney failure after undergoing heart surgery in the year 2007 or before, there is a good chance Trasylol was used in the surgery.
